Eskwelabs Mentorship

Project Goal and Stakeholders

From October to November 2023, I was engaged as a mentor for Eskwelabs’ Data Analytics Bootcamp. During this 8-week bootcamp, I helped develop students’ understanding on relevant data analytics skills such as Power BI, SQL, Generative AI and Python, as well as Data Storytelling. The final output of the bootcamp was to conduct an exploratory analysis and create a data presentation for a chosen dataset.

For the group I was assigned to mentor, they chose a scenario wherein they would take on the role of a Gaming Analytics Lead for the hypothetical Arcane Studios, a game development company seeking to enter the industry and identify a strategy to become profitable in the long term.

Approach and Methodology

It should be noted that the group did most, if not all of the legwork involved in creating the actual analysis and the report. My role was more supervisory in nature, in how I would help facilitate discussions, provide input whenever they encountered roadblocks in their analysis, and provide feedback and define priorities in developing their report.

In the beginning, the group focused on conducting an exploratory analysis by creating visualizations using Python with the assistance of Chat GPT as part of the bootcamp’s curriculum. Once they had more flexibility with how to conduct the analysis, they began using Power BI to identify their insights before integrating this to their final report using Canva.

A core component of the bootcamp curriculum was creating visualizations using Chat-GPT assisted Python

As the bootcamp sessions progressed, they began integrating more of the concepts that was being taught, such as utilizing a chosen Business Analytics Strategy and Framework, including Statistical concepts into their visuals, and mapping out their presentation using a storyboard.

A significant roadblock that the group encountered was that the dataset they had chosen had data on video games up until 2016. As a result of this, the group agreed to explore external resources from sites such as Statista and the Newzoo’s Gamer Segmentation Report to further deepen their analysis.

Project Outcome

After several rounds of report design, feedbacking and presentation, the group was able to come up with their final output as seen below:

I was particularly proud of the how the group worked together to create their report. As this was my first time, being a mentor for the the Data Analytics Bootcamp, it was encouraging receiving positive feedback on their experience of working with me. Below are sample testimonials collected from the Bootcamp's feedback form:

"Good support to the group in terms of direction and decision-making. He really listens to us and gives crucial feedback and insights to guide us in the making of this presentation.

He also employs positive reinforcement which further boosts the team's morale. Also, he is quick to step in whenever he notices we're having some trouble moving forward and is quick to share how we can go about it, which really helps make the work faster and gear towards the right direction."

"A great mentor and a teacher. Very knowledgeable about the topics we covered in the sprints. He's also approachable and kind. He really guided our group to deliver commendable outputs."

"Has a really good grasp of the concepts taught, great help in further explaining the lessons and tools taught, created a safe, open, and productive environment for us to learn and make mistakes (makes me feel like we're really in this together lol), guides us thoroughly during BOR sessions and even beyond that.

Appreciate the time and effort for answering our questions and giving us supplementary info. And the balancing act of when to step in and when to step back in order for our group to work on our dynamics :)"
